Military crackdown during Iran protest

Activists say death toll in the ongoing anti government in Iran has reached at least 646 people. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, which has been accurate in previous unrest in recent years and gave the latest death toll early Tuesday. The agency relies on supporters in Iran cross-checking information.

The agency said 512 of the dead were protesters and 134 were security force members.

More than 10,700 people have been detained over the two weeks of protests, the agency said.t people have been killed by government forces as the government continue to crack down on the protesters.
To frustrate the protest, the Iranian government has shut down the internet and phone lines cut off. This does not stop the protest.

U.S. President Trump offered support for the protesters, saying on social media that “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!”

Meanwhile, the Iranian government has warned the US of the consequences of any military attack on Iranian soil.

The demonstrations began on December 28 over the collapse of the Iranian rial currency, which trades at over 1.4 million to $1, as the country’s economy is squeezed by international sanctions in part levied over its nuclear program. The protests intensified and grew into calls directly challenging Iran’s theocracy.
